Pemco’s experience in refractory glazes began in the 1970’s. Today, we are harnessing our technical know-how and powder production capabilities to re-strenghten our position in this sector with an approach tailored specifically to meet individual customer needs.

Our powder production facilities are centred in Brugge, the home to our Research and Development team. In close collaboration with each customer’s own experts, we are able to provide detailed analysis of coating performance. We use a broad range of Physical and Chemical analyses such as Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy and DSC and TGA, XRF together with particle size distribution to ensure the highest quality of powder compositions is achieved. In fact, quality control is rigorously applied throughout the production process, starting from the analysis of the raw material until the final performance of our finished products. Chemical analysis, fusion flow and thermal properties (HM) are determined during frit smelting. Particle size distribution is conducted on the finished glass powder.

The glass powder is easily mixed with water to form a slurry. Refractoy producers for steel foundries and aluminium casters around the world spray the slurry onto products. This is to improve the life durability of metal processing infrastructure and alloys at high temperature and increase essential lubrication of sliding gates.

Pemco’s product, Vitromail®, offers a wide range of high quality enamels for glass substrates which provide durable coatings with a wide variety of colours. These enamel coatings enhance the chemical and physical properties of the glass substrate used in many applications such as architecture, furniture, appliances, automotive, glassware and containers. With Pemco’s broad product range, excellent quality and dedicated technical service, the customer is assured of getting the optimum solution as dictated by the application. Vitromail® is also used for decorating and inscriptions and enamelling, not only on glass, but also cast-iron, steel, aluminium and stainless steel.

Vitromail® is supplied in various forms either as pastes (oil-based, water-based or UV curable), flakes or as powders. Many techniques exist for the application of Vitromail® on the glass substrate. Screen printing, curtain coater and roller coater are methods used on flat glass surfaces while more complex convex or concave shapes require stamping. Once applied the medium is removed by drying the coating which is subsequently fired at temperatures in the range of 500°C to 700°C depending on the substrate and application.

The Frit smelting plants of Pemco International are amongst the most advanced in the world. For the manufacture of vitreous enamels, the raw materials used for smelting have to pass intensive quality control tests before they can be weighed by formula, homogenised and introduced into the smelting furnaces. Typical batches contain up to 20 different raw materials such as quartz, borax, aluminium oxide, soda, titanium oxide and complex fluorides. Smelting of the raw materials requires temperatures at or above 1500ºC.

Pemco’s porcelain enamels protect the underlying material against corrosion, as well as giving the material excellent anti-bacterial properties and hardness. They also enable customers to enhance the visual appeal of their product with attractive and durable colours.

Today, porcelain enamels are typically applied as direct-on single-layer enamels, thus eliminating the need for applying two or more separate layers. The formulation of the direct-on single layer is such that proper adhesion, coverage and uniform coating as well as the desired colour is achieved in one step. The more traditional method of a ground-coat followed by at least one cover-coat is still used where aesthetic or other requirements put exceptional demands on the coating. In applying enamel coatings a wide range of application techniques are available, each of which will impact the particular enamel formulation. Kitchen appliances, hot water tanks, sanitary ware, chimneys, stoves and architectural panels are just some of the applications for Pemco’s Porcelain Enamels.
